His unique training in sleep surgery and epidemiology has enabled Dr. Kezirian to complete fundamental research in the field. He has authored over 90 research publications related to sleep disorders and sleep apnea surgery. His work is cited often and addresses some of the most important questions facing patients and surgeons:
Dr. Kezirian has written numerous research articles and book chapters on these topics and others related to snoring and sleep apnea surgery. He incorporates this work in his frequent lectures to patients and colleagues throughout the country and around the world. As an expert in the field, he has been asked to serve on the scientific advisory board or as a consultant for 10 different medical device companies involved in the treatment of snoring and obstructive sleep apnea. Dr. Kezirian also serves as an editor or journal reviewer for several medical journals because of his expertise in the field.
Dr. Kezirian is the Past President (just the second President) of the International Surgical Sleep Society, the world’s preeminent organization dedicated to the surgical treatment of snoring and obstructive sleep apnea.
Dr. Kezirian is the only surgeon on the Advisory Board of the American Sleep Association.
Education and Experience
Upon graduating magna cum laude from Harvard College, he went on to earn a Master of Science from the University of Oxford. He attended medical school at the University of Pennsylvania, which consistently ranks as one of the top five medical schools in the country. During medical school, Dr. Kezirian was elected to the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha honor society. He then completed residency training in Otolaryngology—Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Washington, one of the top residency programs in the country, where he also obtained a Master of Public Health degree in epidemiology. After residency training, he completed a sleep surgery fellowship at Stanford University.
Following this training, Dr. Kezirian was Director of the Division of Sleep Surgery in the Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery at the University of California, San Francisco for 9 years and then at the Keck School of Medicine of USC for 10 years before moving to the University of California, Los Angeles in 2023.
Dr. Kezirian is double Board-certified in otolaryngology—head and neck surgery and sleep medicine. This dual training improves his understanding of snoring and sleep apnea as well as treatment selection and outcomes. He is an active member of the American Academy of Otolaryngology—Head and Neck Surgery and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a Fellow of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. From his days as a medical student, Dr. Kezirian was fascinated by snoring and obstructive sleep apnea because of their impact on personal relationships, quality of life, and health. His interest grew as he became aware of how much was still unknown about snoring and sleep apnea surgery. Sleep surgery offered an ideal opportunity, not only to care for his own patients but also to perform quality research that other physicians could use to treat their own patients.
Dr. Kezirian has dedicated his entire career to the surgical treatment of snoring and obstructive sleep apnea, one of the few surgeons in the world to do so. He is committed to improving the evaluation and treatment of patients because many different procedures are needed to treat the wide variety of patients he sees. Dr. Kezirian takes pride in sharing his expertise with patients and other surgeons, whether through appointments, lectures, or his blog.
Dr. Kezirian’s father was an obstetrician-gynecologist in Los Angeles, and his mother has worked for decades in volunteer organizations dedicated to medicine and the well-being of others. They instilled the values of commitment to and compassion for patients as well as the satisfaction of making a difference in people’s lives through the practice of medicine. Dr. Kezirian personally cares for all of his patients and takes the time to explain every aspect of their care clearly.
